Add/Sub Maths

Please answer these questions and show your strategies

  1. Mrs Tofa is travelling to Australia. She intends to buy cookies for her students in Room 7. A packet of cookies has 12 cookies in it. If Mrs Tofa wants to give her 31 students 3 cookies each, how many packets does she have to buy?
12 cookies, 31 students, 3 cookies each.
31 x 3 =93 divided by 12 = 7.75
So Mrs. Tofa has to buy 8 packets of cookies.
  1. On a cool day the school swimming pool will have around 1700 litres of water. However on a hot day, the water level drops by 178 litres. How many litres of water will be in the pool on a hot day?
1700 - 178 = 1522
  1. Mrs Tala goes shopping every Tuesday with her friends. On each Tuesday she spends around $97. If Mrs Tala shops every Tuesday for three months, how much money would she have spent?
Jan = 4 Tuesdays
Feb  = 4 Tuesdays
Mar = 5 Tuesdays
4 + 4 + 5 = 13
$97 x 13 = $1261
  1. Pt England school has 2489 students, Glen Innes school has 757 students and Ruapotaka has 278 students.

  1. What is the difference between the number of students in Pt England school and Glen Innes school?
2489 - 757 = 1732
  1. What is the difference between the number of students at Ruapotaka school and Glen Innes school?
757 - 278 = 479

Mathmatics

WALT: We are learning to solve
subtractions problems using various strategies
      8 14
1) 294 - 167= 127
14 - 7 = 7
80 - 60 = 20
200 - 100 = 100
7 + 20 + 100 = 127

      7 14
2) 384 - 158 = 226
14 - 8 = 6
70 - 50 = 20
300 - 100 = 200
6 + 20 + 200 = 226

   6 15 13
3) 763 - 477 = 286
13 - 7 = 6
150 - 70 = 80
600 - 400 = 200
6 + 80 + 200 = 286

     7 14 13
4) 853 - 367 = 486
13 - 7 = 6
140 - 60 = 80
700 - 300 = 400
6 + 80 + 400 = 486

Maths strategy

W.A.L.T. Solve multiplication problems using our xtables and partitioning numbers.

Miss Stone has ordered a hug box of lollies for the class. The box contains 12 packets of lollies. In each packet there are 14 lollies. How many lollies could Miss Stone have altogether?
My strategy:
2 + 10= 12
10 x 10 = 100
10 x 4 = 40
100 + 40 = 140
2 x 10 = 20
2 x 4 = 8
20 + 8 = 28
140 + 28 = 168
12 x 14 = 168
