The Girl In The Red Dress
Once upon a time, there lived a girl named Sindy, whose life was cut short at the tender age of 18. Overtime myths and legends grew around Sindy. She became known as the girl in the red dress. The people at Newbury village said she haunted the place, they swore they saw a glimpse of her red dress on nights when the wind howled and the moon was hidden by dark and foreboding clouds. But there was one place every villager had sworn they had seen Sindy, the Judges Pool. The deep and dangerous pool was a notorious place for drowning and it was where Sindy lost her life many years ago.
One rainy afternoon, Sindy was sitting in her bedroom in her gloomy red dress, combing her long dark hair, looking in the mirror. All that she could see in the reflection that stared back at her was a face falling with sadness. Sindy was a girl who grew up lonely, she had no friends, no family, only herself, the Judges pool and sometimes imaginary people she could create in a useless attempt to end her loneliness. The villagers called her crazy when they found her, in her red dress, talking to invisible people. The next day would be Sindy’s 18 birthday, a day she knew should be special but was one she feared would just be like all of her days, spent on her own in utter despair.
Sindy was right. Her special day never happened. Sindy had heard that people often celebrated special occasions with alcohol and so she decided she would do the same, it was getting dark so Sindy decided she would visit one place she felt at peace, the Judges pool, to make her birthday wish. She took two bottles of wine and left for the pool
After her first bottle was finished Sindy felt strangely brave and euphoric. She stood on top of a rock, closed her eyes and whispered into the darkness:” I wish I never had to leave this spot”. A few seconds later she opened eyes, stepped to her right, when suddenly she felt dizzy. She missed a step, stumbled ever so slightly and found herself falling, slowly into the never ending darkness. She felt like she was flying, she felt free for the first time in her life. When she hit the water, she sank slowly into its inky darkness and the icy cold seeped into her bones and gripped her heart. And she died just like she lived, alone without anyone noticing.
Over time, more and more people began to lose their lives in the Judges pool. Stories began to swirl about people seeing shadows and glimpses of red in the woods surrounding this place of death. One day young peter almost lost his life. When he was questioned by his family, he swore that a girl in a red dress had swam towards him, calling him deeper into the pool. Suddenly he felt her pulling him down, down further into the pool but fortunately his friends saved his life by pulling him out before the Judges pool became his final resting place. He then began to tell myths to the villagers about the girl in the red dress and that once you enter, you never walk out alive.
