My trip to Rangitoto Island

My trip to Rangitoto Island
On Wednesday 15th of November 2017 Room9, 10 and a few of Room 8 and 7 went to Rangitoto Island by bus and a ferry boat. We went to see how the island was formed  from a series of volcanic eruptions under the sea. There were volunteers from Kidscan and they were great leaders. When we got off the bus we walked in a straight line towards the docks and boats. When we got there we had to brush our shoes and my foot felt tickly because I was exciting to go on a ferry. When we were finished we went on the ferry and I felt sea sick because we were at the bottom of the boat and I could see the ocean water near me. When we arrived we had morning tea under a huge shelter and I was amazed to see Rangitoto Island.

First when we were going on the hike but we had to go to the toilet and then we wait for everyone to come out then we go for the hike. When everyone was out we started to walk and I got a lot of energy that time. Key and I walked with a lady and I called us the Three Musketeers but then I changed it into the Three Explorers and the lady liked it because the Three Musketeers were not in a hike they were at the palace so I changed the word musketeers into the explorers. When we were far away from the shelter I still had lots of energy in me but I got hot so I took off my raincoat and the lady helped me to take off my raincoat and put it in my bag.

Secondly we were halfway there and we were the only group in the middle because we were expecting to be in our own groups we made at school but it was changed. Going up was to steep but going down wasn’t and it was slippery for my shoes. When we reached the top I thought that the teachers just took us there just to look at a beautiful view but they took us to look at a view and have lunch. Then we went down with Kristel and she disappeared so we walked down the hill with a year 7 girl Mary and it was funny because Key almost hit his face on a rock.

After that we were almost there so I shouted freedom but we weren’t there yet and Mary laughed. When we were there Kristel and her crew were already there so we had a great time walking altogether and I putted my bag a water bottle on top a rock and went toilet and when I got out I thought My school bag and bottle were gone but it wasn’t. When the other group came we all saw a stingray next to the shore a I thought it was a shark but sharks are not in New Zealand.

Finally it was time to go to school we said by to the volunteers and we went over to the bridge and on the ferry and we got to go on the very top.

It was very fun walking on Rangitoto Island.

Acrostic Poem

Seven sea turtles are endangered
Eggs look like ping-pong balls
Artificial lighting confuse the hatchlings

Turtles are green
Under the sea they swim fast
Reptiles are cold blooded
Turtles have hard jaws
Leather backs are use to make boots
Each sea turtle eggs are buried under the sand
Sea turtles have no teeth

Kelly Tarltons

On Wednesday 25th of October 2017 Room 9 and 10 went to Kelly Tarltons by bus. We went there so we could  learn about the marine life of sea animals.

First we saw the penguins swimming in the water and they looked so cute because I thought that they were so cuddly but I didn’t know if they were cuddly. Then we saw the the penguins on the ice and we saw a lady feeding the penguins sardines and some penguins were pecking her bottom for the lady to feed them some more sardines. When the penguins slept  they put their head backwards and they lay their eggs on the rocks. When we finished looking at the penguins we went through the conveyor belt and it made me dizzy and I thought that I was going side to side but I wasn’t and it was so funny.

Secondly we saw  Robert Falcon Scott’s Hut and it was so creepy and old. We saw ice gears, old clothes, bunk beds, gramophone and a piano. They were all old and I was so scared of it because I always thought that it was haunted by a ghost but ghosts do not exist. Scott and his crew lived in Antarctica which was so cold because there were just ice and snow.

After that we went through the cafe, the playground and the kid’s room. When we went through all of that we went to a room with information about the sea turtles. Then we saw a secret door and  a nice young landy led Room 9 into the secret door and in our new classroom. Our teacher’s name was Sakura and she was friendly. We learnt lots of stuff and she even let us  feel all the shells and she even had a shark mouth. She showed us a picture about black people who built a house in two days and  it was earthquake proof, flood proof and volcano proof.

After class we went off to have lunch and it was fun there and we took a tour through the tunnel twice. On the third round we got out of the tunnel and Miss Elia disappeared and we couldn’t find her.  It was time to go back to school so  we went through Robert Falcon Scott’s hut and I was so scared then we went through the penguins and out the door.

I had a great time at Kelly Tarltons because we got to see the penguins and other sea animals.

Digestion

Digestion
When you eat food, the things in it go all around your body. This starts with digestion.

The journey of food.

You put the food into your mouth then you chew it with your teeth, the tongue moves the food around and the saliva breaks down the food and the food swallow.

Food travels along a tube called the oesophagus.
It then reaches your stomach. This is like a stretchy bag. This is where the food is mixed with juices and turned into gooey liquid.

This gooey liquid travels through a very long tube called the small intestine. The digested food passes into your blood, and goes where your body needs it. Any food that can’t be digested becomes waste and is stored in the large intestine until it is passed out.

Sailing The Pacific

Watching the clouds movement helped navigators to know when land was close. Clouds move slow when they are across land. The color of the clouds helped too. Sometimes the underside of a cloud would reflect a hint of green if it was above land or a cloud’s color might brighten as it moved over a sunlit lagoon.

Procedure

Purpose: Instructions on how to make Chocolate Chip Biscuits

Ingredients:
75 g butter,
1\2 cup white sugar,
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 large egg,
1\2 cup chocolate chips,
1\2 tsp baking soda,
11\4 cups plain flour.

Steps:
1. Preheat oven to 180C (170C fan bake). Line an oven tray with baking paper or a non-stick liner.

2. Microwave butter in a microwave-proof bowl for 1 minute. Add sugars and eggs and beat with a fork until mixed thoroughly.

3. Sprinkle chocolate chips into the bowl. Measure baking soda and flour into a sieve placed over the bowl, shake them into the bowl and mix everything well.

4. Roll the mixture into 12 equalled-sized balls. Place these on the tray,  leaving  room  for  spreading,  and gently flatten to about 1cm thick (The mixture firms up a little on standing-if it is too soft to form into balls initially, you can spoon it out of the tray.)

5. Bake just below the middle of the oven for 10-12 minutes on until golden -brown-a fan oven is likely to cook the biscuits more quickly warm, Lift  them onto a cooling rack, then the shape and cook the rest of the mixture the same way .

6. When biscuits are cold, stove in an airtight container/jar.

Conclusion: Finally you can enjoy your Chocolate Chip Biscuits.

Insulation

Insulation
Today we went to Mrs.Tofa’s class. We saw a video about a baby called Ioane who lived in a house that was not insulated and he went to the hospital for seven days. Ioane was just three months old and he was so sick because  the house that he lived in was not insulated. His bathroom and his cupboard was mould. His house had only one heater and it was in the corner of his living room.

After that we  watched another video called Miter 10 and there was a man who insulated his house. He insulated his underground house, attic and his walls. For his walls he used pink batts and for his floor he did mammoth and for his attic he did pink batts.

Maths strategy

W.A.L.T. Solve multiplication problems using our xtables and partitioning numbers.

Miss Stone has ordered a hug box of lollies for the class. The box contains 12 packets of lollies. In each packet there are 14 lollies. How many lollies could Miss Stone have altogether?
My strategy:
2 + 10= 12
10 x 10 = 100
10 x 4 = 40
100 + 40 = 140
2 x 10 = 20
2 x 4 = 8
20 + 8 = 28
140 + 28 = 168
12 x 14 = 168

DENSITY

We did an experiment on DENSITY.
Question What happens when you drop an egg into ordinary drinking water and an egg into salt water?
Observation
  1. The egg in the glass of ordinary water sank to the bottom of the glass.
  2. The egg in the salt water floated.
Conclusion

THis happens because salt water is denser or heavier than the     ordinary water. It was easier for the egg to float.Image result for egg that floating
